Fey creatures resemble the mundane creatures they derive from, but with brighter colors, delicate features, and elegant wings such as those of a pixie or sprite. Despite their fragile-seeming appearance, fey creatures are every bit as hardy as their non-fey relations, though they sacrifice raw might for grace and the ability to fly.

They live long lives, barring death by misadventure, and rarely show outward signs of age.

Some fey creatures owe their nature to fey ancestors interbreeding with mortal beings, while others are races in their own right. Still others began life as ordinary creatures and were infused with fey essence through the magic of learned spellcasters or the influence of ancient powers of nature. As a rule, fey creatures rarely dwell in civilized lands, both by preference and because the conditions that give rise to the fey rarely occur in urban surroundings.

If not already born into realms of primeval wild or areas touched by great fey powers, fey creatures soon seek them out. Though more prone to mischief than mayhem, fey creatures run the gamut from inimical to sprightly in behavior. Those inclined toward play and jest take a dim view of interlopers lacking in good humor.

Such foul-tempered intruders risk humiliation at best if they insult the feyand much worse if they raise arms against them. More aggressive fey still possess a well-developed though sadistic sense of humor.

Such wicked fey use their inborn powers to lure outsiders to their doom, rather than into mere inconvenience. Fey creatures generally have cordial relationships with animals, allies of nature such as druidsand other fey. Exceptions exist where rival communities of fey dwell in proximity to one another.

In these cases, any fey creatures in the vicinity ally with one side or the other according to their own inclinations, only rarely standing outside such conflicts. Fey creatures derived from horses and the like often serve as mounts, though only to other fey or to allies of nature who acknowledge them as at least near-equals, if not full partners.

Senses : A fey creature gains low-light vision. If the creature already has flight with a maneuverability of good, it increases to perfect. Special Abilities : A fey creature gains one of the following abilities for every 4 HD or fraction thereof.

A fey creature can use Stealth to hide in any sort of natural terrain, even if the terrain does not grant cover or concealment. This bonus does not stack with any racial Stealth bonus possessed by the base creature. A fey creature can change shape into a single form. Many fairies were tiny, and many of the legends about fey were quite true. Many fey, pixiesfor example, could only be seen by those to whom they choose to reveal themselves, though powerful wizards could often make them out. Elves and fey were united by common belief, by their connection to natural purity, and for the fey, this was enough to create a connection of appearance.

Gnomes enjoyed making light of supposedly serious things, and this united them with fey as well, though only in attitude.

Fey and goblins might be connected more closely, by age-old blood lines, but this was conjecture. As for whether fairies desired weal and woe, both were the case. Fey were creatures connected closely to nature, and just as rain from clouds saved farmers and troubled travelers, so did fey help some and injure others.

Fey were a people of many different alignments and interests, like humans were, and just as most of humans, dwarves, and elves concern themselves little with the fair folk, so the fair folk, by and large, concern themselves very little with the mortal races. The darkest and most powerful legend about fey went back eons, to the creator races. Some sages claimed that fey creatures known as the leShay were one of the four, possibly five, creator races.

Going to the source, asking ancient fairies, proved only to be a headache, alas, as none seemed interested in providing a straight answer. It was said that to protect oneself from fey one should carry ironwear the color red, turn their clothing inside out, or be near running water.

Iron was said to be detrimental to the skin of faeries, the color red and inside-out clothing a sort of camouflage because the Fair folk couldn't see it, and running water a source for disrupting magic spells or bad luck. There were many different species of fey, and connections between them could be hard to identify, other than being natives of the Feywild.

Some fey were strongly bound or associated with specific natural locations such as water bodies, landmarks, or other geographical features.

These included dryadshamadryadsnymphsnereidsand fossergrim. When you cast a spell like conjure woodland beings, does the spellcaster or the DM choose the creatures that are conjured? Some spells of this sort specify that the spellcaster chooses the creature conjured. Other spells of this sort let the spellcaster choose from among several broad options.

The design intent for options like these is that the spellcaster chooses one of them, and then the DM decides what creatures appear that fit the chosen option. The DM will often choose creatures that are appropriate for the campaign and that will be fun to introduce in a scene.

However, me and my players are having trouble matching our expectations and even progressing the game quickly enough. The player will cast this with some expectation:. How am I, the DM, meant to choose the creatures that appear without screwing over the player but also not giving him exactly what he wants?

Then, how do I make this a fast choice? Am I supposed to have a list available of all fey or all beasts or all elementals by CR? If so, should I, before each adventure, run through the list and decide which creatures should appear? Or make them random? I play a druid character who regularly uses conjuration spells. To make life easy on my DM I prepared a cheat sheet of all the summonable subjects.

It's just a little sheet that has AC, relevant abilities and a hit point marker for each summoned creature. If there are 8 creatures summoned for that CR, then there are 8 hit point markers. He usually has me run them for him, but he still makes the decision. Each entry on the sheet has key words that can help him make a quick judgement call: underground, flying, darkvision, poison, etc.

When I cast the spell, I tell him what my character is hoping will appear, usually using a keyword. If I am hoping for air support, I might get owls, or bats. For poison, I might get snakes or spiders. So yeah, if your players intend on making a lot of use of these spells, some prep work ahead of time can be helpful.

If you can convince them to do the heavy lifting as I did for my DM so much the better. In general, the DM should make something appear that has some relevancy and helpfulness for the current situation. The player is expending a spell resource, after all. The most straightforward way to deal with this is just to let your players choose the creatures they want.

In my experience, players casting these spells know what they want, and they're casting these spells to get that thing. A spell that summons some random creatures just isn't as useful or interesting as a spell that lets you summon creatures you choose.
